This session will provide an overview of 5 forms of congenital heart disease that commonly present with profound hypoxemia. Along with reviewing the anatomy and physiology of each lesion, time will be spent discussing methods for stabilization and safe transport of such patients to a tertiary care center. Topics that will be reviewed include the initiation and management of prostaglandins (PGE) to maintain patency of the ductus arteriosus, management of side effects of PGE use, methods to balance a parallel circulation, and finally, acute resuscitative interventions during transportation.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe common hypoxemic congenital heart lesions and their presentations.
Upon completion, participants will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of prostaglandin use and the side effects of therapy.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe parallel circulations and demonstrate methods of intervention to balance circulation.
