President and CEO
Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania
James Houser serves as President and CEO of Pittsburgh-based UPMC’s Center for Emergency Medicine. The center is responsible for emergency medicine education, research, and specialized treatment and transport. STAT MedEvac, the transport arm of the center, operates two critical care ground units and 18 helicopter bases across Pennsylvania and surrounding states and the District of Columbia.
Jim got his start as a volunteer firefighter. Finding a passion for EMS, he quickly became an EMT with aspirations to work as a flight paramedic. From EMT, dispatcher, paramedic, nurse, nurse practitioner, executive, and leader, he has since held many roles in our industry.
Jim is active within the larger transport community. He currently serves as Chairman of the Association of Air Medical Services board and past secretary and treasurer. He is also the co-chair of the newly formed AAMS Data and Technology Committee. He is the past co-chair of the Pennsylvania Critical Care Task Force and supports the Pennsylvania Emergency Medicine Foundation as a board member.
In addition to overseeing the Center for Emergency Medicine, Jim also serves as a lead CAMTS surveyor and occasionally covers shifts in a community hospital emergency department as a nurse practitioner.
Jim enjoys travel, photography, The Ohio State University football, running (when not injured), and traveling to Disney with his family. Jim and his wife, Sarah, have two children. Madison recently graduated with her second degree and has started her nursing career at UPMC, and his son is a high school junior and recent college graduate (yes, you read that correctly).
